With the increasing development of fuel cells, there is an increasing amount of research into PEMDMFC, but PEMDMFC is not yet widely used. Currently, there are two major obstacles inhibiting the application of PEMDMFC, namely, the low activity of methanol oxidation catalysts and the phenomenon of methanol crossover through the polymer electrolyte membrane from the anode to cathode side. Efforts were expended in developing new anode catalysts and, to some extent, methanol impermeable membranes. Nafion, perfluorosulfonic acid polymers, are the most commonly fuel cell membranes. However, a methanol transport through the membrane was observed. Crossover causes lost of fuel at the anode and performance lost at the cathode due to consumption of oxygen and catalyst poisoning. If these problems can be effectively addressed, the direct methanol fuel cell will offer the best chance for fuel cell commercialization in private vehicles.
