Many factors affect the temperature of a fuel cell. The greatest threat to the thermal balance is the exothermic reactions that occur in the fuel cell itself. The main component of a hydrogen fuel cell is the membrane electrode assembly (MEA). The MEA is responsible for converting the chemical energy of hydrogen fuel into electricity. During the MEA process, heat is generated as a by-product. This heat must be strategically released to ensure optimum operating temperatures. The MEA process must be carried out within a narrow temperature range. For example, many fuel cells used in automobiles need to dissipate heat over a temperature range of 40°C. This results in the need for larger radiators and air intakes compared to conventional internal combustion engines.
