Electrochemically generated hydrogen is a promising vector in a future CO2-neutral energy economy. Great efforts are made to improve established technologies like fuel cells and water electrolyzers with growing interest in hydrogen technology. Various systems are available for water electrolysis in the temperature range of up to about 100 °C, which can be differentiated according to their electrolyte. The most prominent electrolytes are alkaline aqueous solutions and ion exchange polymers. Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) is a mature technology. AWE plants use caustic KOH solution as the electrolyte and cost-effective nickel materials as electrodes. Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) combines the advantages of alkaline systems, namely, low-cost materials (no titanium and noble metal catalysts required), with the advantages of a polymer electrolyte system (higher current densities, flexibility toward load changes, high pressure operation).
