Alkaline fuel cells: contemporary advancement and limitations

With the growing interest for fuel cells the alkaline fuel cell (AFC) has proven to be a good alternative. The long lifetime and the possibility to use non-noble catalysts gives it advantages over all other fuel cell systems. AFC allows the use of non-noble metal catalysts or smaller amounts of precious metal catalyst to obtain an equivalent reaction rate. Water and heat management is simplifified by the use of a circulating electrolyte. By replacing the electrolyte, contamination can be easily removed increasing the lifetime. It has been shown that CO2 from air causes a reduction in the performance of the fuel cell. A simple CO2 scrubber connected to the airflow can prevent this.
