Flow Battery Coatings

Flow batteries are an electrochemical energy storage technology that uses redox reactions of active species in an electrolyte to store and release energy. Their core performance (such as energy efficiency, cycle life, and power density) is highly dependent on the electrochemical activity and conductivity of the electrodes. Electrodes, the core sites of electrochemical reactions, are typically based on carbon-based materials (such as carbon paper, carbon cloth, and graphite sheets). Carbon black coatings enhance reaction kinetics by increasing the electrode’s specific surface area, optimizing conductivity and catalytic activity.

Ultrasonic spraying is a key process for the precise preparation of carbon black coatings. Ultrasonic spraying utilizes an ultrasonic transducer to convert electrical energy into high-frequency mechanical vibrations (typically 15-120 kHz). This atomizes the carbon black suspension (carbon black particles dispersed in a solvent) at the nozzle into uniform, micron-sized droplets. These droplets are then precisely deposited onto the electrode substrate under low-pressure airflow or gravity, forming a uniformly distributed carbon black coating with controllable thickness. This technology overcomes the limitations of traditional coating methods and has become a core process for optimizing flow battery electrode performance.

Ultrasonic spraying technology effectively addresses the challenges of insufficient flow battery electrode conductivity, slow reaction kinetics, and short lifespan by precisely producing a uniform, controllable carbon black coating. Its core advantages lie in coating uniformity, material utilization, and process stability, driving the commercial application of flow batteries in large-scale energy storage and providing key technical support for energy transition. Future technological advancements are expected to further reduce costs and expand this process to more electrochemical energy storage scenarios.
