The role of lithium battery separator

1. Positive and negative poles

The main function of the diaphragm is to isolate the positive and negative electrodes and prevent them from direct contact. If there is no diaphragm, a short circuit will occur between the positive and negative electrodes, leading to dangerous situations such as overheating, leakage, and explosion inside the battery.

2. Transfer ions

Although the separator separates the positive and negative electrodes, the battery needs to complete the transfer of charges through ion transport. Therefore, the membrane needs to allow the passage of ions and be able to control the flow speed and direction of ions.

3. Control temperature

When the battery is working, it will generate a certain amount of heat. If the temperature is too high, it will affect the battery life and safety. The separator of some high-end potassium-ion batteries can also control the temperature by adjusting the permeability

4. Prevent chemical reactions

In some cases, the positive electrode material will chemically react with the negative electrode material to produce gas or other harmful substances. The separator prevents these substances from mixing together, thus keeping the battery safe.
