Spraying of Gas Diffusion Layers

Spraying of Gas Diffusion Layers – Coating SystemCheersonic

Proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) show great promise in becoming energy-delivery devices for a variety of future technologies, including stationary power generation and automotive applications. Water management is also critical for good PEMFC durability and lifetime because too little liquid-water can cause membrane dehydration and too much liquid-water can flood the cathode side of the PEMFC, causing less oxygen to reach the active catalyst sites and consequently decreasing the cell performance. Hence, a balanced liquid-water scheme is essential to achieve the full potential of a PEMFC. Ultrasonic spraying allows better control of the performance of the gas diffusion layer.

Cheersonic’s fuel cell catalyst coating systems are uniquely suited for these challenging applications by creating highly uniform, repeatable, and durable coatings. Using the company’s patented ultrasonic spray head technology, it can spray uniformly and efficiently on proton exchange membranes and gas diffusion layers. Uniform catalyst coatings are deposited onto PEM fuel cells, GDLs, electrodes, various electrolyte membranes, and solid oxide fuel cells with suspensions containing carbon black inks, PTFE binder, ceramic slurries, platinum and other precious metals. Cheersonic’ s line of XYZ motion ultrasonic coating systems offer unique options that enable us to customize these machines based on customers’ process requirements. They are ideal for Solar and Fuel Cell manufacturing as well as research and development coatings in different environments, from fully inert to high temperature needs or rotational Z-axis for rod-shaped substrates.Due to the characteristics of controllable film thickness and high uniformity, the durability and conductivity of the film electrode can be greatly improved.

The advantages of Cheersonic’ s fuel cell catalyst coating systems include:

1.Very high Platinum utilization proven in MEA fabrication; as high as 90%.
2.Non-clogging
3.Low-flow spray reduces spillage and air pollution.
4.Continuous or intermittent operation possible
5.Highly porous coatings are extremely durable, preventing cracking or peeling of catalyst layer.
6.No moving parts to wear out
7.Minimal maintenance and downtime.
8.Robust design and materials resist corrosion.
9.Ultrasonic energy disperses the agglomerated particles, producing a homogeneous coating.
