The price is relatively cheap, and the efficiency is about 70%~80% lower. The main equipment includes power supply, cathode and anode, diaphragm, electrolyte and electrolyzer box. The liquid is usually sodium hydroxide solution, and the electrolytic cell mainly includes unipolar and bipolar.

Proton exchange membrane electrolyzer for hydrogen production. The efficiency is higher than that of alkaline electrolyzers, mainly using ion exchange technology. The electrolytic cell is mainly composed of polymer film and yin and yang electrodes. Due to the high proton conductivity, the working current of the electrolytic cell can be greatly improved, thereby improving the electrolysis efficiency. With the advancement of proton exchange membrane and electrode precious metal technology, the cost of hydrogen production in PEM electrolyzers will be greatly reduced.

Hydrogen production from solid oxide electrolyzers. It can work at high temperature, and part of the electrical energy can be replaced by thermal energy, with high efficiency and low cost. The solid oxide electrolytic cell is the most efficient equipment among the three electrolytic cells. The waste heat after the reaction can be combined with the steam turbine and refrigeration system. Efficiency can reach 90%.

The technical route of electrolysis of water for hydrogen production is mature, and the key factor that has not been promoted on a large scale is electricity price.
