Fabrication Method for MEA for Fuel Cells

Next-generation fuel cells, electrolyzers, and metal-air batteries aim to meet the often conflicting demands of high-performance, low-cost, and long life through the use of advanced materials (catalysts, membranes, gas diffusion media (GDM)) optimized for targeted operating conditions. At the heart of the PEMFC is a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) that is comprised of catalyst layers (CLs), a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM). The micrometer-thick cathode and anode CLs on opposing sides of the PEM together form the catalyst-coated membrane (CCM). The CL structure contains a continuous network of ionomer and catalyst (e.g., Pt/carbon) in contact with the PEM to promote proton transport between the PEM and catalyst; the CL must also contain a through-connected pore network to facilitate mass transport of reactant gases to the catalyst and expulsion of product water from the CL.

Cheersonic has developed coating processes that prvide excellent results with durable, pinhole-free coatings. And because the equipment has the advantage of extremely high liquid utilization, it can greatly reduce research and production costs. UAM4000L is a tabletop system often used in R&D or low volume production for coating Proton Exchange Membrances (PEMs) or other electrolyte materials with metal catalyst inks. These ultra thin materials require several layers of coating to achieve necessary weight gain of inks without deformation of the delicate membranes.

1.Very high Platinum utilization proven in MEA fabrication; as high as 90%.
2.Non-clogging
3.Low-flow spray reduces spillage and air pollution.
4.Continuous or intermittent operation possible
5.Highly porous coatings are extremely durable, preventing cracking or peeling of catalyst layer.
6.No moving parts to wear out
7.Minimal maintenance and downtime.
8.Robust design and materials resist corrosion.
9.Ultrasonic energy disperses the agglomerated particles, producing a homogeneous coating.
