The direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC), which directly converts the chemical energy of methanol into electrical energy, is one of the most promising alternative power sources for transportation, potable electronics and stationary applications. Although the DMFC has a lower power density than the hydrogen fuel cell, the high theoretical energy storage capacity of methanol has the potential to increase the energy density of the DMFC system above that of competing electrochemical power sources. The ease of use of a liquid fuel, which is more convenient to store and refuel, makes the DMFC an attractive alternative to batteries and combustion engines. Solid polymer electrolytes (SPE), mainly proton conducting polymer membranes, have been used in DMFCs.
