The drug-eluting stent (DES) is a stent that uses the bare metal stent platform to carry (load) anti-vascular intimal hyperplasia drugs, which are eluted and released locally in the blood vessel, which effectively inhibits the stent intimal hyperplasia and prevents in-stent restenosis. The effective application of drug-eluting stents can greatly reduce the incidence of restenosis and re-intervention. The drug-eluting stent consists of three components. The first is the stent itself. Early drug-eluting stents were made of stainless steel and gradually transitioned to thinner stent components such as cobalt chromium and platinum chromium. The second component is a polymer that controls the release of the eluted drug and the time of drug delivery. Generally, polymers are a permanent part of the stent, which has been continuously improved over time, including the development of biocompatible and even bioabsorbable polymers. The last component is the eluting drug.
