Affected by the new crown epidemic, telecommuting and online shopping have rapidly become popular, and the sales of PCs, various electronic equipment, and game consoles have soared. Ultimately, the global semiconductor supply is insufficient.
In the case of semiconductors, there are products that are well-supplied and those that are truly under-supplied. 28-nanometer semiconductors are hot spots now and in the future. So what’s the reason for the concentration of semiconductors used in most electronic devices at 28nm?
28nm semiconductors have the following typical characteristics:
The 1.28nm technology node is the last generation to use Planer transistors.
2. Do not use Self-Aligned Double Patterning (SADP, self-aligned double pattern, SADP is used from FinFET).
3. Enterprises that originally adopted the IDM (Integrated Device Manufacturer) model have been handed over to Foundry since the 28-nanometer generation.
From 28/22 nanometers to 16/14 nanometers, although the performance has been improved, the cost has also risen, and there is this irreconcilable contradiction. In terms of Apple’s iPhone and High Performance Computing (high performance computing) direction, FinFET (using SADP) will be used even if the cost increases slightly, but most other electronic devices such as cars do not require such high performance. The performance of the 28-nanometer technology node is sufficient, and even many manufacturers prefer to use the 28-nanometer which has an advantage in cost. Therefore, most of the semiconductors used in electronic devices are concentrated on 28 nanometers.
1. LSI (System on Chip, SoC), TCON (Timing Controller, timing controller) for notebook computer Wi-Fi systems.
2. SoC and NAND controller of the tablet.
3. The SoC, TCON, and connecting semiconductors (Connnectivity) of TV sets.
4. SoC for router Wi-Fi.
5. SoC (entry-level) for smartphones, communication semiconductors (RF, Radio Frequency, radio frequency), display driver ICs (Display Drive IC, DDI), logic semiconductors for CMOS image sensors (CMOS Image Sensor, CIS), Image Signal Processor (ISP), NAND controller for face recognition, etc.
6. MCU (Micro Controller Unit, generally referred to as a microcontroller unit) for automobiles.
7. SoC, MCU, NAND controller for game consoles.
8. MCU for wearable devices, True Wireless Stereo (TWS, true wireless stereo) for wireless headphones, ASIC (logic semiconductor for specific orientation), FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array, Field Programmable Logic Gate Array), Semiconductors for connectivity (Connectivity).
The uses for 28nm (including improved 22nm) semiconductors are endless. The demand for these 28nm semiconductors has rapidly expanded due to the new crown epidemic. Moreover, almost all of these 28-nanometer semiconductors are produced by Foundry.
