January 11, 2022, Calif. — SEMI highlighted in its quarterly World Fab Forecast that global front-end fab equipment spending is expected to grow 10% year over year in 2022 to more than 980 million billion, marking the third consecutive year of growth.

Fab equipment spending will continue to grow in 2022, following a 17% increase in 2020 and a 39% increase in 2021. The industry’s last three-year streak of growth was from 2016 to 2018, and the last three-year streak was in the mid-1990s.

Ajit Manocha, President and CEO of SEMI, said: “The semiconductor equipment industry has experienced a period of unprecedented growth, with chipmakers expanding capacity over the past few years to meet the needs of a variety of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, autonomous machines and Quantum computing.”

Expenditures by Sector

The foundry segment is expected to account for 46% of total spending in 2022, an increase of 13% compared to last year, followed by memory accounting for 37%, a slight decline compared to 2021. In the memory segment, DRAM spending is expected to decline, while 3D NAND spending will rise.

Spending on microcontrollers (including MPUs) is expected to surge by 47% in 2022. Power-related equipment is also expected to grow strongly by 33%.

Spending by Region

Equipment spending in South Korea is expected to rank first, followed by Taiwan and China, which will account for 73% of all fab equipment spending by 2022.

FAB equipment spending in Taiwan is expected to grow by at least 14% this year after a substantial increase in 2021. Spending in South Korea rose sharply in 2021 and is expected to rise 14% in 2022. Spending in mainland China is expected to fall by 20%.

Europe/Middle East is the second largest consuming region in 2022 and is expected to experience a significant growth of 145% this year. Japan is expected to grow by 29%.
