PEM Fuel Cells

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells convert hydrogen and oxygen into water, releasing energy. At the heart of a fuel cell is a proton exchange membrane (catalyst-coated membrane, CCM) coated on both sides with a platinum-based catalyst.

PEM fuel cells can be used in different mobile and stationary applications such as energy storage, forklifts, light and heavy trucks. In transportation, fuel cell electric vehicles compete with battery electric vehicles. However, the characteristics of longer driving range and significantly reduced refueling time make hydrogen fuel cell vehicles the first choice for long-distance and heavy-duty transportation.

In an effort to reduce CO2 emissions and create a climate-neutral society, PEM fuel cells are widely predicted to grow. This will enable the global deployment of fuel cell electric vehicles and significantly reduce their cost.
