Medical Tubing Materials

Medical Tubing Materials – Tube CoatingCheersonic

Depending on the application, medical hoses and tubing can be produced from a variety of materials, including plastics such as fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP), nylon, PVC, polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE); thermoplastics Elastomers (TPE); and elastomers, especially silicone.

Silica gel. Silicone is a key tubing material for medical devices, especially for implants. The unique properties of high-consistency silicone rubber (HCR) provide uncured green strength for a variety of custom and complex processing techniques. Other advantages include:

* It is proven to be inert and biostable, making it the gold standard for biocompatibility.
* It does not react with other elements.
* It can be platinum cured for highest purity.
* Hardness values can be easily changed.
* Allows extended post-curing for minimum levels of extractables.
* No leaching plasticizers are used.
*Specific formulation for long-term surgical implants.
* Odorless, tasteless and non-toxic.
* It has good physical and tactile properties.
* Can be made into various textures.
*It can be sterilized by radiation, ethylene oxide, steam: 30 psi/2 bar at +123 °C/+253 °F.
* Resists extreme temperatures and remains elastic: -54 ° to +204 °C / -65 ° to +400 °F; brittle point: -73 °C/-100 °F.
* It can be processed in a variety of ways, including molding, compression molding, tableting, dipping, and extrusion, as well as combining with other materials and substrates.
* May include different fillers for specific applications.
* It provides excellent permeability allowing absorption of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API).

Drug elution. Silica gel has biocompatibility and biostability advantages and is commonly used in catheters, respirators, and implants; however, silica gel is not immune to bacterial colonization.

One option to prevent the pipe from spreading bacteria is to impregnate vulcanized silicone with API. Soak the silica gel in the drug solution and wait for the drug to be absorbed by the silica gel material.

Platinum cured silicone. Platinum-cured silicone eliminates the secondary post-curing process required with older peroxide-cured silicone systems. Platinum-cured silicone contains fewer volatile organic compounds and cures faster at lower temperatures.

With this technique, multiple lumens or channels can be produced as a single extruded tube. More lumens means more dimensions to control and measure.

Platinum-cured silicone can bond to metals used in implants such as titanium, stainless steel and nitinol, as well as plastics such as polycarbonate, polyester and PEEK.
