Protective Coatings: Solution System and Coating Process Technology

Protective coatings are core functional materials widely used in industrial manufacturing, electronic devices, architectural engineering and other fields. They form a dense protective film on the surface of substrates such as metal, glass and plastic, effectively isolating corrosion, wear, high temperature, moisture and ultraviolet erosion, and extending the service life of materials and equipment. The performance of protective coatings depends on two core factors: scientific and stable solution formula and precise and standardized coating process.

The solution systems of protective coatings are mainly divided into organic, inorganic and hybrid types, each with unique application scenarios and performance advantages. Organic coating solutions are dominated by resin-based systems, with good flexibility, adhesion and decorative properties, moderate curing conditions, and are suitable for conventional surface protection of daily industrial products. Inorganic coating solutions take inorganic materials as the main component, featuring high hardness, high temperature resistance and strong weather resistance, and are mostly used in extreme working environments such as high temperature and strong corrosion. Hybrid solution systems combine the strengths of organic and inorganic components, balancing flexibility and hardness, and have become the mainstream development direction of high-performance protective coatings in recent years. Before construction, all coating solutions need to be adjusted for viscosity and uniformity to avoid film defects such as sagging, pinholes and uneven thickness.

Matched with different coating solutions, diversified coating processes realize efficient and uniform film formation. Traditional processes include brush coating, dip coating and conventional spray coating. Brush coating is simple and flexible, suitable for small-area repair and irregular workpiece local coating, but relies on manual operation with poor uniformity. Dip coating can form a uniform film on the surface of complex structural workpieces, with high coating efficiency, and is suitable for batch processing of small parts, but it is easy to cause solution waste and thick edge film. Conventional spray coating is widely used for large-area planar workpieces, with adjustable film thickness and good flatness.
With the upgrading of precision manufacturing, ultrasonic spraying has become an advanced precision coating process, which uses ultrasonic vibration to atomize the coating solution into tiny uniform droplets, realizing ultra-thin, uniform and non-damaging film formation on precision substrate surfaces. In addition, processes such as electrodeposition and powder coating are applied in professional scenarios: electrodeposition ensures uniform coating of complex-shaped workpieces through electric field deposition, while powder coating adopts dry film formation, which is environmentally friendly and wear-resistant, suitable for metal surface anti-corrosion treatment.

The final performance of protective coatings is also affected by surface pretreatment and curing processes. Cleaning and roughening the substrate surface can significantly improve coating adhesion; reasonable low-temperature or high-temperature curing procedures can promote the full cross-linking and film-forming of the solution system, avoiding coating peeling and aging. With the continuous progress of material technology, protective coating solutions are developing towards environmental protection and high functionality, and coating processes are moving towards precision, intelligence and low consumption, providing reliable surface protection for various high-end manufacturing fields.
